The Gold Coast has invested in light rail and heavy rail in recent times. The light rail system came online this year and runs from the Hospital and University in Parkwood down through Southport, to Surfers Paradise and culminates in Broadbeach. There is currently planning for the next stage of development for the light rail, which will see connect to Helensvale Station. The third stage of development is still a long way off but one option is for it to continue to Coolangatta to connect with the Gold Coast Airport.
There are problems associated with continuing light rail to Coolangatta. The big hurdle is Burleigh, which has a lovely village feel that would be compromised by having the light rail run directly through it.
Gold Coast heavy rail stops are Reedy Creek. From there it’s easy to draw a line on the map that takes it directly to Coolangatta. Following the existing freeway corridor, this option means minimum disruption and reclaiming of land.
The problem with heavy rail is it skirts the back of the Gold Coast rather than going through the destinations people want to visit. We would need to consider transport options for connecting to the rail system if this was going to be a viable transport option for the Gold Coast.
